| Fury Shut Out Philadelphia, 4-0, in Conference Quarterfinals
July 19, 2009-Paced by two goals from team captain Kelly Henderson of Baldwin, the Long Island Fury shut out the Philadelphia Liberty, 4-0, in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal match tonight at Adelphi University's Competition Field. The Fury had a 25-5 advantage in shots. Long Island swept all three games from the Liberty this season and is now 10-0-1 while Philadelphia finished their Women's Premier Soccer League season at 5-6-0. The Fury await the results of the Millburn Magic-Bay State Select game later this evening to find out who they will play in the Eastern Conference semifinals this Wednesday night at Adelphi. "A tremendous performance from everyone," commented Fury head coach Paul Riley. "We established a nice rhythm in the second half." Cari Roccaro of East Islip, having celebrated her 15th birthday this past week, opened the scoring in the 20th minute when she dribbled into the Liberty penalty area and scored off a 20-yard blister from a tough angle past Liberty keeper Meghan Walker. Henderson then stole the ball at midfield and scored on a 23-yard shot in the 50th minute. Three minutes later, Molly Bruh of East Williston placed the ball in the corner of the net after a cross by Meredith Speck. Henderson closed out the scoring in the 59th minute when she feigned a pass to the left wing and scored from 21 yards. Liberty keeper Walker made five saves. Sharing the shut out in goal for the Fury were Jillian Mastroianni of Durham, Connecticut (3 saves) and Brittany Anghel of East Meadow (0 saves). The offensive MVP of the match was Henderson while defensive MVP honors went to Fury defender Alaina Beyar of South Hempstead, who stopped the Liberty forwards every time down the field.
