Long Island Fury Have a Hot Time in Lancaster, Defeat the Inferno to Advance
to the Conference Finals
The Long Island Fury defeated the Lancaster Inferno, 2-1, in Pennsylvania Dutch Country on July 21 in the second round of the Women’s Premier Soccer League playoffs to advance to the Eastern Conference finals this weekend. With the win, the Fury even their all-time season series with the Inferno at 2-2-1. Lancaster was the only WPSL squad to have an advantage in the all-time series with the Fury prior to tonight’s match.
The Fury got on the board in the 15th minute when Massapequa’s Katie Greer scored on a breakaway. They made it 2-0 ten minutes later as Bay Shore’s Jasmyne Spencer (photo below) scored on another breakaway off an assist from Greer. Spencer took the ball up the left side of the field and scored inside the far post.
The teams went into the locker room at halftime with the score still 2-0 as the Fury had dominated the first 45 minutes of play. The Inferno picked up the pace in the second half and was finally able to score in the 85th minute past Fury keeper Brittany Anghel of East Meadow.
“The defense was solid and bended but did not break when the Inferno put everything they had at us in the second half,” commented Fury head coach Michael Demakis. “The midfield controlled the play and the forwards had some opportunities in the game and it was nice to score two goals before halftime.”
The Fury, now 8-2-1, continue the defense of their national championship with a heavyweight match-up this weekend against the Boston Aztec, coming in at 9-1-1, in the Eastern Conference finals.
