Boston Aztec Top the Fury, 2-1, in Overtime in the Eastern Conference Final
The Boston Aztec ended the Long Island Fury’s season and the defense of their Women’s Premier Soccer League national championship with a 2-1 win in overtime in Byfield, Massachusetts in the Eastern Conference final on July 24. The Fury, Central Division champions, finish the season at 8-3-1 while the Aztec, Northeast Division champs, are 10-1-1 and head to the WPSL Final Four in Dallas at the end of July.

In the 10th minute, after some physical play at the top of the Fury penalty area, Boston’s Nikki Cross scored off a rebound on a shot that hit the post. The score remained 1-0 Boston until the Fury got their kicks in minute 66 when Charlotte Miller scored on a 40-yard shot from the touchline.

The game was decided in the 121st minute, at the end of overtime, when Boston’s Chioma Igwe scored on a shot that beat Fury keeper Brittany Anghel of East Meadow at the far post, giving Long Island a heartbreaking loss.

“Our girls played unbelievable,” commented Fury head coach Michael Demakis. “I have total respect and admiration for the Fury players who came and played for our team tonight. I could not be any happier or prouder.”

“We have been consistent throughout the past five years of our existence,” Coach Demakis continued. “They play the Fury style—a quick, possession game featuring a total team defense and a total team offense. We don’t settle for anything less than a national championship.”

The coach also took the time to speak about keeper Brittany Anghel, who had to fill the big shoes of Jillian Mastroianni in goal. “Brittany replaced Jillian and she replaced her perfectly. She did not give up a bad goal all season.”
