| Fury Win, Academy Tie in Important Road Games
July 8, 2009-The Long Island teams dominated play on the road tonight. The Long Island Academy had to settle for a 1-1 draw with the Morris County Colonials while the Long Island Fury shut out the Adirondack Lynx, 3-0. Down 1-0 at halftime in New Jersey, Jose Batista of Rego Park scored the equalizer for the Academy in the second half. "We were very, very good," commented Academy head coach Adrian Gaitan. "We dominated play. We missed a lot of chances, though, and gave up a bad goal on their only real scoring opportunity." The Academy are now 3-0-3 in the National Premier Soccer League's Atlantic Conference while Morris County is 2-4-1. Things were better for the Fury in Upstate New York. Alyssa Pember of Northport scored on a header in the 15th minute off a pass from Vicki DiMartino of Massapequa Park. East Williston's Molly Bruh hit the Adirondack net with a rocket of a direct kick from 30 yards in the 54th minute. Then, DiMartino closed out the scoring in the 70th minute from an assist by Oceanside's Kelly Farrell. DiMartino now has scored 12 goals and provided four assists to lead the Women's Premier Soccer League in scoring with 28 points. Jillian Mastroianni of Durham, Connecticut and Brittany Anghel of East Meadow shared the shut out in goal. Mastroianni played the first half and Anghel the second with each making two saves. "A great win on the road! The players acquitted themselves well," commented Fury head coach Paul Riley. "We played some great stuff in the second half!" The Fury remain undefeated at 8-0-1 while the Lynx are now 6-2-0. The Fury's final regular season game is this Saturday, July 11, 6:00 pm vs. the 3-5-1 SoccerPlus Connecticut Reds at Adelphi's Competition Field. The Reds need to win or tie and receive help in other games to make the WPSL playoffs as eight of the 14 teams in the Eastern Conference qualify for the playoffs. The Fury are going for the number one seed in the conference for home field advantage. However, the Boston Aztecs have a perfect record at 8-0-0 and are looking to steal the Fury's gold.
