Fury Win, Academy Tie June 11, 2009, Garden City, New York-The Long Island Fury defeated the Philadelphia Liberty, 3-1 and the Long Island Academy tied the Maine Sting, 2-2, in two exciting soccer matches tonight. The doubleheader was played at foggy Competition Field, on the campus of Adelphi University. The Fury opened the scoring in their Women's Premier Soccer League game in the 11th minute when Vicki DiMartino of Massapequa took a pass from Kelly Henderson of Baldwin and scored from a sharp angle from five yards. The lead doubled in the 26th minute when DiMartino fed a pass to Hannah Cerrone of Wappingers Falls whose 25-yard shot eluded Liberty keeper Meghan Walker. Philadelphia got back in the game in the 53rd minute when Whitney Weinraub scored from five yards past Fury keeper Jillian Mastroianni. A Mastroianni punt in the 68th minute bounced over the heads of the Liberty defense, DiMartino ran on to it and scored on a breakaway from 15 yards. The Fury had topped the Liberty, 3-2, last Saturday night in Pennsylvania. With the win tonight, the Fury improve to 3-0-0 and the Liberty fall to 1-2-0. "I was very pleased with our performance, especially with a depleted roster," commented Fury head coach Paul Riley. "Just like last Saturday night, Vicki DiMartino was again the difference. I'm really happy that we were able to take six points from a good Philadelphia team in the span of one week." The Academy was not so lucky, tying the Maine Sting in the National Premier Soccer League nightcap. The Academy are now 2-0-1 while the Sting are 0-1-1. Tom Lobben of Glen Head made it 1-0 Academy with a 20-yard shot off an assist from Queens' Danny Leon in the 18th minute. Maine's Colin Reilly equalized in the 33rd minute on a 6-yard header off a corner kick. Mark Tremblay got the assist. The Sting went ahead in the 39th minute when Teja Barkmann scored from 8 yards after Academy keeper Mike Rodriguez bobbled the ball. Long Island dominated the entire second half and scored in the 75th minute when Port Washington's Kevin Davies beat Sting keeper Cole Davidson to the ball off a 60-yard pass from Renier Mena of Uniondale. Davies scored from 15 yards. Ironically during the game, the Sting scored on a corner kick, the Academy did not even though the hosts had a 14-3 corner kick advantage. "After the first half, I was not displeased with our performance," commented Academy Director of Football Paul Riley. "We scored first and thought the game would be easy but it was not." "Credit to them as they were big in the box and hard to play against. I think that we have to work on our corner kicks."
