Fury Shut Out NYAC, 1-0, on Devin Pendergast's Goal
For the third consecutive game, the Long Island Fury played to a 1-0 score. Unlike the two previous games that they lost, the Fury defeated the New York Athletic Club, 1-0, at Adelphi University’s Competition Field. The Fury is now 4-2-0 in the Women’s Premier Soccer League standings while NYAC drops to 2-4-0.

A poor NYAC pass outside their penalty area just 20 seconds into the match gifted Karin Simonian of Westbury a breakaway but her 20-yard shot hit the post.

In the 15th minute, Devin Pendergast of Babylon dribbled through the NYAC defense and her shot from 20 yards beat NYAC keeper Tatianna Saunders. It was the UConn-bound forward’s third goal of the season to lead the Fury.

The Fury had opportunities to put the game away in the second half, including a Margo McGinty breakaway, but they were not able to score an insurance goal.

“We kept possession but our challenge this season remains the final third of the field,” commented Fury head coach Michael Demakis. “We keep teams around and give them hope.”

Saunders made five saves for NYAC and keeper Brittany Anghel of East Meadow made two saves for the Fury. The Player of the Match was Fury defender Alyssa Pember (photo below) of Northport.

The Fury plays at 3-2-0 BuxMont Torch FC in Pennsylvania this Saturday night, June 19 in the battle for first place in the East-Central Division.
