Fury Shut Out BuxMont Torch FC, 1-0, in Pennsylvania
The Long Island Fury defeated BuxMont Torch FC, 1-0, on June 19in Souderton, Pennsylvania in the battle for first place in the Women’s Premier Soccer League East-Central Division. The Fury improve to 5-2-0 while the Torch is now 3-3-1. It was the sixth 1-0 game of the seven Fury matches this year.
“The coaching staff was very pleased with our play tonight,” commented Fury head coach Michael Demakis. “The team was brilliant and controlled the ball very well. We were very solid in the back and in midfield.”
The only goal of the game occurred in the 61st minute. The Fury’s Amanda Rooney of Hicksville tackled the ball away 40 yards from the Torch goal and her through pass to Charlotte Miller of Scarsdale (photo below) split two defenders. Miller scored inside the far post on a breakaway.
Long Island continues to have problems scoring this season, unlike past years. They lost their 2009 leading scorer, Vicki DiMartino of Massapequa Park, who is representing the United States this summer. Their 2008 leading scorer, Jasmyne Spencer of Bay Shore, is recovering from a knee injury and is expected back for the Fury next week.
Fury goalkeeper Brittany Anghel of East Meadow had the shut out in goal.
