| Fury, Academy Sweep Doubleheader From NJ Opponents
June 24, 2009-The Long Island Fury and Long Island Academy won both games of a doubleheader tonight at Adelphi University's Competition Field, defeating opponents from the Garden State. A three-goal kick trick in the first 48 minutes by Massapequa Park's Vicki DiMartino paced the Fury to a 5-1 win over the Millburn Magic in Women's Premier Soccer League action. DiMartino scored two opportunistic goals in the first half, the second one coming off an assist by Bay Shore's Jasmyne Spencer. In the 48th minute, DiMartino was charged by Millburn keeper Lia Fierro and she buried the penalty kick in the left corner of the net. DiMartino now has eight goals to lead the Fury. Spencer scored off a rebound the next minute from five yards. Then Kelly Henderson of Baldwin scored in the 63rd minute from seven yards. Bellerose's Cody Newman assisting on both goals. That's when the Fury brought on their substitutes, including Brittany Anghel of East Meadow replacing Jillian Mastroianni (0 saves) in goal. Anghel made four saves and conceded an 85th minute goal by Katie Ryan from 12 yards. "I thought it was a complete performance. You can see the players getting to know one another better and the teamwork is improving," commented Long Island Fury head coach Paul Riley. "We're going for the number one seed as it will be difficult to beat us on this wide field in the playoffs." With the win, the Fury remain perfect at 6-0-0 while the Magic drop to 3-4-1 in the Eastern Conference. In the nightcap, the Long Island Academy defeated the Morris County Colonials, 3-1, in National Premier Soccer League action. In the 43rd minute, a cross from Queens' Shaun Higgins deflected to New Hyde Park's Christian Uy who scored from three yards. Uy scored again in the 47th minute, from 15 yards, off a direct kick by Renier Mena of East Meadow. In the 75th minute, Oceanside's Andrew Herman dribbled along the goal line and passed to Rego Park's Jose Batista, who hit the net from 12 yards. Morris County got on the board in the 81st minute when midfielder Johnny Donado sent a long pass to Steve Jablowski, who dribbled around Academy keeper Hernando Santamaria and scored from 25 yards. Mike Rodriguez played the first half in goal for the Academy, making one save and giving up no goals. Santamaria made three saves. "I thought that we played very well in the first 20 minutes of the second half, otherwise we were sloppy," Academy coach Adrian Gaitan stated. "We made some good adjustments at halftime. Our midfielders needed to possess the ball further up the field and help the forwards. We have five or six players who can score goals. It says something about a team that doesn't play particularly well but gets the three points." With the win, the Academy is now 3-0-1 while Morris County drops to 0-4-0.
