Fury Top Atlantic City Diablos, 1-0

June 27, 2009-The Long Island Fury topped the Atlantic City Diablos, 1-0, tonight at Adelphi University's Competition Field. The Fury improve to a perfect 7-0-0 while the Diablos drop to 3-3-2 in the Eastern Conference of the Women's Premier Soccer League.

Vicki DiMartino of Massapequa Park scored the lone goal, from five yards during a 32nd minute goal mouth scramble off an assist by Bay Shore's Jasmyne Spencer. DiMartino now has nine goals on the season.

Give the devils their due, as along with the New England Mutiny, the Diablos are the other team that traditionally have given the Fury the most problems. The Fury now have a 3-3-0 all-time record against the Diablos.

However, the Fury dominated this game, with a 21-1 shot advantage and a 9-0 corner kick advantage. Atlantic City keeper Bridget Mahon made 10 saves while Long Island goalie Jillian Mastroianni was not called on to make a save.

The Diablos did have opportunities in the Fury's penalty area although Long Island's somewhat makeshift back line of defenders Tara Mendoza, Cody Newman, Alaina Beyar, Deanna Murino and Heather Tomko repelled those attacks.

The Fury now hit the road for two tough encounters with squads just behind them in the Eastern Conference. This Tuesday night, June 30, they play at the 4-1-0 Lancaster Inferno, then travel Upstate for a Wednesday, July 8 encounter at the 5-1-0 Adirondack Lynx. The Fury's final regular season home game is Saturday night, July 11 vs. the 2-4-1 SoccerPlus Connecticut Reds at Adelphi.
