Fury Clinch Division With 2-0 Victory Over the Millburn Magic
The Long Island Fury’s division-clinching victory on June 28 produced the answer to what could be a trivia question one day. But more about that later.

The Fury took the field against the Millburn Magic from New Jersey knowing that a victory would clinch the East-Central Division of the Women’s Premier Soccer League. After a scoreless first half, the Fury got on the board with a 10-yard shot by Lorraine Quinn of Farmingdale off an assist from Karin Simonian of Westbury in the 51st  minute. Both teams pressed for another goal and the Fury defender and Player of the Match Alaina Beyar of South Hempstead (pictured below) made the Magic’s hopes for a tie disappear when she blocked a four-yard shot from Kim Malecki in the 83rd minute.

“I was very pleased with our play tonight and our ball control, from the defense to the midfield to the forwards,” commented Fury head coach Michael Demakis. “We scored two great goals and it’s been awhile since we scored two goals in one game. We took more shots than in recent games but can still do better in the final third of the field.”

The Fury’s insurance goal in the 85th minute produced the answer to the trivia question as it was scored by Jaclyn Rose (Rosie) DiMartino of Massapequa Park, who became the fourth member of her family to score for the Long Island Fury. Her two older sisters, Tina and Gina, now play for the Fury’s former coach, Paul Riley, with the Philadelphia Independence of Women’s Professional Soccer. Rosie’s other sister, Vicki, was the Fury’s leading scorer last year and is now training with the United States in preparation for the Under-20 World Cup.

On the insurance goal, DiMartino finished off a quick sequence off passes from Quinn and Kelly Henderson of Baldwin inside the penalty area. The Fury’s Brittany Anghel made two saves for the shutout while the Magic’s Sara Keane had three saves. The game tonight was at Park Stadium in Franklin Square, the home to the New York Hota Soccer Club.

The Fury is now 7-2-0 on the season while Millburn drops to 3-4-1. The Fury’s next match is on Saturday, July 10 at the 4-4-0 New York Athletic Club.
