| Fury Lose, 1-0, to the Millburn Magic in New Jersey The Women’s Premier Soccer League national champions Long Island Fury lost to the Millburn Magic, 1-0, in New Jersey on June 4. The Fury drops to 3-1-0 on the season while Millburn improves to 2-1-0. The only goal of the game was midway through the second half on a breakaway that went past Fury keeper Arianna Efstathiou of Massapequa Park. “I could not ask anything more of our players or be more proud of them,” commented Fury head coach Michael Demakis. “Every single player left it on the field.” It was the Fury’s first defeat in nearly two full years. The Fury look to get back to their winning ways next Saturday night, June 12, 7 pm vs. the 0-0-2 Lancaster Inferno at Mitchel Athletic Complex. Meanwhile, the men’s team, the 1-2-0 Long Island Academy play at the 3-0-0 Brooklyn Italians that same night. Founded in 2006 as a Women's Premier Soccer League franchise, the Long Island Fury won the WPSL national championship in both 2006 and 2009. Seven Long Island Fury alumnae--Gina and Tina DiMartino, Kelly Henderson, Ali Long, Rebecca Moros, Alex Singer and Sue Weber--used their phenomenal play for the Fury to become professional players in Women's Professional Soccer. Their former coach, Paul Riley, now coaches the Philadelphia Independence franchise in that same league.
