Fury Come From Behind and Top Philadelphia, 3-2

June 6, 2009, Plymouth Meeting, PA-Two goals by Vicki DiMartino of Massapequa and a game winning goal by Jasmyne Spencer of Bay Shore paced the Long Island Fury to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Philadelphia Liberty. The Fury was down 2-1 before the heroics of DiMartino and Spencer.

DiMartino scored in the 8th minute off an assist by Devin Pendergast of Babylon, then scored again in the 62nd minute. Spencer provided the game winner in the 72nd minute from an assist by Baldwin's Kelly Henderson.

Fury goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni made two saves.

With the win, the Fury improves to 2-0-0 in the East Division of the Women's Premier Soccer League while the Liberty drop to 1-1-0.

"It was a great three points for us, especially being on the road and not having a full roster," commented Fury head coach Paul Riley. "Emily Menges and Rosie Hayes both made impressive debuts for the Fury tonight."

Vicki DiMartino was the offensive MVP of the match while Garden City's Emily Menges was the defensive MVP.

Coach Riley sounded like he was talking about the Belmont Stakes when he added, "The pace was too slow for us tonight."

The Fury return to action this Thursday night, June 11 with a 6 pm match with this same Philadelphia Liberty side. The 8 pm nightcap features their men's team, the Long Island Academy at 2-0-0, facing the 0-1-0 Maine Sting. The doubleheader is at Adelphi University's Competition Field.
