Fury Win Home Opener, 1-0, Over BuxMont Torch FC
It wasn’t easy but the Long Island Fury, the defending Women’s Premier Soccer League national champions, defeated WPSL expansion franchise BuxMont Torch FC, 1-0, at Mitchel Athletic Complex tonight.

A Devin Pendergast goal in the 59th minute was all the scoring the Fury would need. The Babylon resident stole the ball from a Torch defender and scored past keeper Gabrielle Pakhtigian. Eight minutes later, Torch forward Ashley Lachapelle dribbled past Fury keeper Danielle Ippolito but the Fury preserved the shut out with a goal line clearance from defender Margo McGinty of Levittown.

“For such a young team tonight, I thought we played okay,” commented Fury head coach Michael Demakis. “It was only when forwards such as Karin Simonian and Lorraine Quinn started taking on their defenders in the second half that the game changed.”

Pakhtigian made four saves in goal for the Torch. Ippolito and Brittany Anghel played one half each in goal for the Fury. Anghel had to make no saves while Ippolito made one.

The Fury’s brother team, the Long Island Academy, open their home season this Tuesday night, May 18, 7 pm vs. the New Hampshire Mountaineers at Mitchel Athletic Complex.
