Long Island Fury Wins Opener, 8-0, Over NYAC Forward Alaina Beyar of South Hempstead scored a three-goal hat trick and added one assist as the Long Island Fury defeated the New York Athletic Club, 8-0, tonight at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point. The Fury is now 1-0-0 while NYAC drops to 1-1-0. Captain Kelly Henderson added two goals, including the best one of the night, a 25-yard blast into the upper right corner of the net in the 41st minute. 15-year-old Karin Simonian scored one goal and had one assist. Leigh Anne Cummings and Hannah Cerrone each scored one goal. Long Island players Jasmyne Spencer (last year's Fury leading scorer), Domenica Hodak and Meredith Speck each added one assist. Keepers Becky Wachsberger and Arianna Efstathiou shared the shutout in goal with both making one save. The Fury scored four goals in each half in a match that they dominated, enjoying a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. "After Alaina scored in the 10th minute, I thought that our youthful exuberance took over," commented Fury head coach Paul Riley. "Alaina Beyar was our MVP tonight while defender Hannah Cerrone was a close second. Everybody had a strong match tonight, including Kelly Henderson with another very good performance." The Fury return to action on Friday night, May 30 with a 6:00 pm kick-off vs. the Northampton Laurels at USMMA in Kings Point. The Fury's brother team, the Long Island Academy, play in the nightcap at 8:00 pm vs. the Atlantic City Diablos.
