Fury Win on Road, 2-1, Over the Philadelphia Independence
The national champion Long Island Fury continued their winning ways with a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Independence tonight. The Fury is now 3-0-0 in the Women’s Premier Soccer League while Philadelphia drops to 1-1-0.

Karin Simonian of Westbury opened the scoring for the Fury in the 23rd minute with a 30-yard rocket off an assist from Bay Shore’s Jasmyne Spencer. Philadelphia responded with a goal off a corner kick in the 43rd minute. That tally ended the Fury’s streak of 737 minutes without surrendering a goal. It also ended goalkeeper Danielle Ippolito’s personal streak of three years of playing in net for the Fury without conceding a goal.

The Fury won the match on an Olympico goal--straight into the net off a corner kick--from Devin Pendergast of Babylon in the 76th minute. North Bellmore’s Ippolito made 12 saves in goal to preserve the win.

“We didn’t look like we had the energy tonight,” commented Fury head coach Michael Demakis. “Two games in three nights took a toll. We leave Philadelphia stealing a win. We persevered through the game and found a way to win, which is what good teams do!”

The Fury has a 10-day break before playing at the Millburn Magic in New Jersey on Friday night, June 4. Their brother team, the Long Island Academy, hosts the New York Red Bulls this Wednesday night, May 26, 7 pm at Adelphi University in a National Premier Soccer League match.
