Next Stop, the Playoffs as the Fury Shut Out Bay State Select, 6-0 July 14, 2007-The national champion Long Island Fury qualified for the Women's Premier Soccer League playoffs by defeating Bay State Select, 6-0, near Boston tonight. The Fury, who close the regular season at 7-1-2, clinched second place in the North Division behind the undefeated New England Mutiny at 7-0-3. Bay State Select finished the season at 2-7-1. "It was a thoroughly professional performance tonight from start to finish," commented Fury head coach Paul Riley. "Bay State couldn't keep up with our speed. It was important to score goals too as we head into the playoffs." Player of the Match Kelly Henderson of Baldwin put the Fury on the board with a goal in the 6th minute. Also scoring for Long Island were Katelynn Donovan of Melville (31st minute), 14-year-old Karin Simonian (34th minute), Jasmyne Spencer of Bay Shore (41st minute), Cody Newman from Bellerose (45th minute) and Alaina Beyar of Rockville Centre (49th minute). Becky Wachsberger of East Meadow (2 saves) and Deer Park's Laura Elfers (1 save) shared the shutout in goal. The Fury will host a first round playoff match this week against an opponent yet to be determined.
