Fury Wins, 2-1, to Advance to WPSL Quarterfinals

(July 21, 2006, Atlantic City, NJ)-Missing nearly half their team due to international commitments, the Fury had a devil of a time but managed to edge top-seed Atlantic City Diablos, 2-1, tonight on the Jersey shore.

"It was a great win! A very gutsy performance," commented Fury head coach Paul Riley. "Sue Weber and Mary Schneck were magnificent in the back once again. Kelly Henderson was the game MVP in my opinion."

Down 1-0, Emily Sammis of Huntington scored off an assist from East Islip's Kerri McNicholas midway through the second half. A 90th minute strike from Kelly Henderson of Baldwin after a free kick from Irish international Marie Curtin was the gamewinner.

Fury goalkeeper Becky Wachsberger of East Meadow made seven saves.

The Fury advance to the Women's Premier Soccer League quarterfinals this Sunday at the Adirondack Lynx, a 3-2 winner over the Northampton Laurels.

The Fury are also in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals and will play the United German Hungarians of Philadelphia. The date of the match is still to be scheduled.
