Fury Women and Reserves Win While Academy Men Fall in Boston Tripleheader July 7, 2007-You don't have to be the singer Meat Loaf to know that two out of three ain't bad. The Long Island Fury and Long Island Academy travelled to Boston today to take on the Aztecs. The two women Fury teams won but the Academy men's team lost in a rare soccer tripleheader. The day began with a 6-2 win by the Fury reserves over the Aztec reserves with the first teams taking the field this evening. In that match, 27 hours after defeating Northampton, 8-0, the Fury did not rest on their Laurels as they shut out the Aztecs women, 4-0. The Fury improve to 6-1-2 while the Aztecs drop to 4-2-1. The Fury got on the board in the 44th minute with a goal by Rockville Centre resident Alaina Beyar off an assist from Gina DiMartino of Massapequa. The score stayed 1-0 until three Fury goals in 10 minutes midway through the second half. Emily Sammis of Huntington scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season off an assist from Bay Shore's Jasmyne Spencer in the 69th minute. A 32-yard rocket from the foot of Holtsville's Tiffany Yovino in the 73rd minute is a candidate for Goal of the Week. Kelly Henderson of Baldwin added an insurance goal with a rocket in the 78th minute from an assist by Kelly Farrell. Fury keeper Becky Wachsberger of East Meadow recorded the shut out with eight saves. "It was a great performance, probably our best performance of the season," commented head coach Paul Riley. "We're playing with a lot of confidence. Four great goals tonight and defensively we made sure that we got behind the ball." The Academy men were not as fortunate, despite goals by Juan Melgar and Maurice Brown plus 10 saves by keeper Michael Testa as they fell to the Aztecs, 3-2. Long Island drops to 3-2-3 while the Aztecs improve to 3-4-2. "It was really disappointing," Coach Riley stated. "We did not have enough up front to bury this team as we should have done in the first half. We're struggling right now."
