Long Island Fury Finally Loses a Match (July 8, 2006, Clifton Park, NY)-The Adirondack Lynx defeated the Long Island Fury, 2-1, tonight. Australian international Heather Garriock scored in the 12th and 15th minutes for the Lynx. Her first goal past keeper Becky Wachsberger of East Meadow ended the Fury's consecutive shutout streak at 642 minutes. Adirondack is in first place in the Women's Premier Soccer League North Division with a 7-2-0 record. The Fury drops to 5-1-1. The Fury's Shannon Donovan of Meville scored on a header off a corner kick in the 82nd minute. Irish international Marie Curtin got the assist on the play. Long Island applied Fury-ous pressure on the Lynx goal in the closing minutes but could not get the tying goal. "We never got out of the blocks tonight," commented Long Island head coach Paul Riley, "We did not defend very well or play well in midfield which is unusual for us." The Fury hopes to return to their winning ways with three tough road matches this week. Long Island plays on Wednesday night against the Boston Aztecs (2-1-3), next Saturday night, July 15 at the New England Mutiny (5-2-0) and then less than 24 hours later on Sunday, July 16 at the Massachusetts Stingers (4-1-1). The Fury will probably need to win two of those three final regular season matches to make the playoffs.
