Academy Wins, 4-1, While Fury Ties, 1-1, on Long Island June 15, 2007-The Long Island teams again outplayed their opponents at Mitchel Athletic Complex tonight. One home team finished off their opponents while one did not and paid the price. The expansion Long Island Academy (2-0-2) defeated the Boston Aztecs, 4-1. Carlo Espinosa of East Islip opened the scoring in the 25th minute when he stole the ball from Boston's Oneil Gray and went around goalkeeper Shane Boggia. 17-year-old Matt Uy of New Hyde Park, a U.S. National Youth Team player, scored in the 38th minute off an assist from Michael Butler of Queens. In the 68th minute, Adam Bruh of East Williston launched a blistering shot from 12 yards which was saved by Boggia but Shaun Higgins of Queens put in the rebound. Boston's Ely Junior made it close with a 25-yard goal in the 80th minute, the first goal given up by the Academy. It took 350 minutes for Long Island to surrender a goal, recalling the Fury's inaugural season which started with not giving up a goal in its first 642 minutes of play. Bruh completed the scoring on a 25-yard free kick in the 90th minute. Academy goalkeeper Billy Gatti of Baldwin made four saves. Earlier this evening, the Long Island Fury (3-1-1) tied the Connecticut Reds, 1-1. The Fury's Jasmyne Spencer of Bay Shore scored on a 12-yard shot just 30 seconds into the match. Kelly Henderson of Baldwin got the assist on the piercing through-pass. Although the Fury dominated stretches of the match, they could not score another goal. Tiffany Weimer tied the score in the 36th minute on a breakaway. Fury goalkeeper Laura Elfers of Deer Park made one save while her counterpart in the Reds goal, Brett Maron, had eight saves. "You're on the doorstep. In this league, you need to put teams away and the Fury did not put them away," commented Paul Riley, coach of both the Fury and Academy. A crowd of 500 watched the action at Mitchel Athletic Complex. The next home match for the Fury is on Friday night, June 22 vs. the 1-2-0 Adirondack Lynx at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale. Kick-off will be at 7:30 pm. The Academy return home for a Sunday night, June 24 encounter with 0-4-0 Real Shore. The match kicks off at 7:30 pm at Mitchel Athletic Complex.
