Long Island Fury Defeats Bay State Select, 4-0

(June 16, 2006, Hempstead, NY)-Featuring a line-up consisting entirely of native New Yorkers as their four Irish internationals were at a World Cup qualifier, the Long Island Fury were still able to defeat Bay State Select, 4-0.

The Fury improves to 3-0-0 and Bay State is now 1-3-0.

Midfielder Kerri McNicholas of East Islip opened the scoring in the 19th minute from 12 yards after a squared pass from Farmingdale's Lorraine Quinn. 15-year-old Alaina Beyar of Staten Island scored on a 10-yard header in the 35th minute off a cross from Alex Singer of Rye.

The Bay State offside trap failed in the 52nd minute so Quinn scored on a breakaway off a lovely assist from Beyar. A 80th minute blast from Melville's Shannon Donovan from 35 yards found the corner of the net.

The Fury defense, led by East Islip's Sue Weber, Dix Hills' Mary Schneck and Northport's Alyssa Pember, bended but did not break. Michelle Betos of Whitestone (four saves) and East Meadow's Becky Wachsberger (three saves) shared the shutout in goal. The Fury has not given up a goal in their brief three-game history and own a 11-0 goal differential.

"I'm obviously very pleased with our progress," commented Fury coach Paul Riley. "The players are getting better and better a little each game and they're understanding more and more what we're trying to do. We can still play better, though."

The Fury continues hosting opponents from Massachusetts with a Sunday night, June 18 encounter with the 2-0-1 Boston Aztecs, 7:30 pm at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. It's a showdown for first place. Tickets can be purchased by e-mailing contact@lifurysoccer.com or phoning 516-764-4588.
