Long Island Fury Shuts Out New England Mutiny, 2-0
(June 9, 2006, Hempstead, NY)-The Long Island Fury continued their unbeaten record, defeating the New England Mutiny, 2-0, at Hofstra Soccer Stadium in Hempstead tonight. It was the Fury's first-ever home match and 325 rain-soaked fans attended. With the loss, the Mutiny drops to 1-1-0. Fury captain and defender Mary Schneck of Dix Hills opened the scoring in the 13th minute from five yards during a goal area scramble after a Fury corner kick. Midfielder Lorraine Quinn of Farmingdale intercepted a Mutiny pass 30 yards from goal in the 72nd minute and scored on a breakaway. Fury goalkeeper Becky Wachsberger of East Meadow made four saves in recording the shutout. Her counterpart in the Mutiny net, Jenny Molina, had two saves. "I don't think this was a great match by any stretch of the imagination. These were two teams that were trying to find their legs at the beginning of the season. We can play a lot better than this," commented Fury coach Paul Riley. "But we're happy to get a 2-0 home win. I thought that midfielder Lorraine Quinn and defender Sue Weber were the best players on the pitch tonight," the coach continued. The 2-0-0 Fury next meet the Bay State Select from Massachusetts next Friday, June 16 at Hofstra. Kick-off is at 7:30 pm. The first 100 fans receive Fury backpacks courtesy of sponsor Arch Capital.
