Albertson Fury Teams Dominate the NEWSS

Many of the top girls soccer players from across the Northeast United States brought their A-games to New York over Thanksgiving weekend. They were out to impress the approximately 100 college coaches scouting and to win scholarships and admittance to the school of their choice. The tournament was the 4th Annual National Elite Women's Soccer Showcase (NEWSS), played at Hofstra University, St. John's University, Mitchel Athletic Complex, Roslyn High School and Dean Skelos Field.

Led by Long Island's own Albertson Soccer Club, the majority of teams that won tournament titles began with the letter "A," appropriate for this A-rated tourney. In the Girls Under 15 Premier Flight, Albertson Fury '93 won the title while the Syosset Rough Riders took the honors in the Under 15 Cup Flight.

In Girls Under 16 Premier, the Albany Alleycats were the champs and the Under 16 Cup Flight winners were Albertson Fury '91.

South Central Connecticut were the champions in the Girls Under 17 Premier Flight while Albertson Fury '90 won in the Cup Flight.

In ther Girls Under 18 age group, the Wallkill Red Devils won in the Elite Flight, Middlepath Extreme in the Premier Flight and Albertson Fury '89 in the Cup Flight.

Started three years ago with 16 girls teams, NEWSS expanded this year to 72 teams and is quickly becoming a Thanksgiving tradition. The tourney was sponsored by the Long Island Fury of the Women's Premier Soccer League. 15 players on that WPSL squad competed on the Albertson Fury teams during NEWSS.

Beyond the continued expansion of NEWSS, Long Island Fury head coach Paul Riley has plans to add a boy's college showcase tournament, which would be played in early December next year.
